I’ve watched Google throw its AI might behind the Pixel Fold. I’ve seen Xiaomi, Honor, and Motorola push thinness and battery life to absurd extremes. And through all of it, I kept waiting for one thing: for Apple to show up and show everyone what a foldable phone is actually supposed to feel like.

Well, it showed up. The iPhone Duo is here, and after spending time with the specs, the software, and the philosophy behind it, I can say this with total conviction: it’s not just the best foldable phone on the market. It’s not close.

The Silicon: A Different Weight Class Entirely

Everything else flows from this, so let’s start here. The A20 Pro inside the iPhone Duo is the fastest chip ever put in a foldable phone, not by a little, but by a margin so wide it changes what a foldable can actually do.

The A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2-nanometer smartphone chip, with two “Super Cores” and four efficiency cores running at nearly 5 GHz. In Geekbench 7, it posts roughly 4,719 single-core and 12,677 multi-core, numbers that make some desktop CPUs look anemic.

Now put that next to the competition. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 3-nanometer part scoring around 3,698 single-core and 10,940 multi-core. That puts the A20 Pro roughly 28% faster in single-core and 16% faster in multi-core. Against the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s Tensor G6 — around 2,671 / 6,802 — the A20 Pro is 77% faster in single-core and 86% faster in multi-core. That’s not just a gap. That’s a different sport.

Let me put it in perspective. The A20 Pro’s single-core score sits above the Apple M5 Max, a laptop chip. Apple isn’t just making the best phone chip. It’s making a chip that competes with its own computers. The package design borrows from Apple’s M-series playbook, connecting silicon and memory directly to the vapor chamber for thermal performance.

That word — sustained — is where the real story lives.

The Throttling Problem Android Foldables Can’t Escape

Every flagship chip looks fast in a 30-second benchmark. The question is what happens after twenty minutes of real work.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is a powerful chip. But it runs hot. Reviewers of the Z Fold 8 note that under prolonged load, the thin body starts shedding performance to keep temperatures in check. Samsung’s cooling compromise is telling: the Z Fold 8 Ultra leans on a graphite sheet rather than a vapor chamber, a decision reviewers say could lead to throttling in demanding tasks. In stress tests, the GPU drops to less than half its peak output as the thermal system struggles inside a 4.5mm chassis.

The A20 Pro doesn’t have this problem. Apple’s wafer-level multi-chip module keeps DRAM out of the thermal path, and the 2nm process cuts power draw meaningfully under sustained load. Foldables have hinges, moving parts, and gaps. Dust is the silent killer of these devices, and Apple is the first to actually solve for it.

And then there’s the crease. Or rather, the near-absence of one.

Apple used a nano-texture finish on the inner display, a micro-lens texture written pixel by pixel with maskless laser lithography, creating a perceptually flat, matte surface. The Z Fold 8 has mismatched ratios, a 10:16 cover display and a 4:3 inner screen, which means apps have to be optimized for two different canvases. It works, but it never feels seamless.

And the A20 Pro’s extra horsepower isn’t just for benchmarks. It has a custom display engine that drives both displays simultaneously, something the iPhone 18 Pro’s chip doesn’t need to do. That’s what powers Duo Preview (a live preview on the outer display while you shoot with the inner one) and Duo FaceTime. These aren’t gimmicks. They’re the kind of experience-level thinking that only becomes possible when the silicon has headroom to spare.

This is what Apple’s vertical integration buys you. The Duo is a device, designed, built, and programmed as a single idea.

The Camera Compromise (And Why It Doesn’t Matter)

I’ll be honest: the iPhone Duo’s camera system is not its strongest suit. It has a 48MP main sensor and a 48MP ultra-wide, but no dedicated telephoto lens. If you’re a photographer who needs 5x optical zoom, this isn’t your phone. The iPhone Pro Max definitely is though.

But here’s the thing: every foldable asks you to give something up. The Z Fold 8 has a triple-camera setup, but it’s also carrying an IP48 rating and a crease you can’t unsee. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold has a telephoto lens, but it’s running on a Tensor G6 that trails the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in raw CPU performance. Apple chose to sacrifice the least important thing. The Duo’s cameras are perfectly capable, 4K at 120fps, macro from the ultra-wide, Center Stage on the cover display. They’re not the reason you buy this phone. The 7.6-inch canvas that unfolds in your hand is.

The Battery and Performance Story

Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer screen, with roughly 24 hours of mixed use. That’s genuinely competitive with the Z Fold 8, which Samsung rates at around only 26 hours of video playback. The Duo uses a dual-battery architecture with a vapor chamber for thermal management, meaning sustained performance doesn’t crater the way it does on thinner devices.

The A20 Pro inside the Duo is a full-fat chip, 6+7 cores, no binned-down nonsense. This isn’t a phone that’s going to stutter when you’re running Split View with a Slack window on one side and a video call on the other. It’s an iPhone Pro that happens to fold.

The Ecosystem Argument

If you’re already in Apple’s world, an iPhone, an Apple Watch, AirPods, a Mac, the Duo doesn’t just fit in. It elevates the whole setup. Handoff works across the inner and outer displays. iMessage, FaceTime, and Continuity features work exactly as you expect. Apple Pencil support is coming later this year, turning the inner display into a genuine note-taking and sketching surface.

Samsung and Google make excellent foldables. But they exist in an ecosystem that’s always been a step behind Apple’s in coherence and polish. The Duo doesn’t just compete with Android foldables on hardware. It competes on the entire experience, and that’s a fight Android can’t win.

The Verdict

The iPhone Duo is not perfect. It’s heavy. It’s expensive. It doesn’t have a telephoto lens. If you judge it on a spec sheet against the Galaxy Z Fold 8, you’ll find things to criticize, sure, but it still comes out on top in a big way.

But specs aren’t the only point. The point is that Apple waited seven years, watched everyone else make the mistakes, and then built the foldable that actually feels finished. The crease is gone. The software is seamless. The build quality is impeccable. The durability is class-leading.

And the chip, the A20 Pro, is so far ahead of every Android foldable that it’s barely a comparison. It’s faster than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 by nearly a third in single-core. It’s faster than the Tensor G6 by more than three-quarters. And unlike every Android foldable on the market, it can hold that speed under sustained load.

Samsung made the first great foldable. Google made the smartest foldable. Apple just made the best one.

And it’s not even close.
